THE LIMBURG
CHILDREN BOOK

Limburg, the most southern province of the Netherlands, has a pretty provincial image. However, this image is far from realistic. Together with the company Media Valley, I made a children book to enlighten the youngest generation about their own history.

The province Limburg may be far away from Amsterdam and the other big Dutch cities, but if you look across our borders, you'll soon realize that we are pretty central within Europe. Due to this position, Limburg is very internationally-minded, but not just that.

The province itself has only been part of the Netherlands for 150 years. Before that, we have been part of Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, and other countries. This leads to a lot of differences between Limburg and the rest of the Netherlands. During my research about this difference, I found realized that one of the main problems is very simple: we don't know our own history. Every Dutch child gets history lessons in school, but these are about the history of our northern brothers and sisters and not about the history of our own region.

To change this, I created the story of Tom and Sophie, who are two siblings who visit their grandmother in Limburg. During a walk, they find a book in the caves, which turns out to be a time machine. With this time machine, they travel through time and get to see Limburg through history. At the end of the book, parents can find all sorts of locations in Limburg where they and their children can still see parts of our history and this makes it possible for them to "travel in time" themselves.

Aligned with the book, I made a series of merchandise products that fit with the style of the book. You can see some of the prototypes below. As the book was made for MediaValley, I won't publish it online, but if there is an interest in the book, please contact me and I'll send you a digital version of the prototype I made.
